Genius idea! I have always wanted to do that. I often buy palettes and don’t end up using all of the colours in them, so this would give me a chance to choose colours that I know I will definitely use. When … Continue reading
I have a spot and absolutely need to hide it! Camouflage? Yes please! I’ve seen quite a few bloggers post pics of their FOTD products and the Catrice Camouflage Cream definitely came up quite a few times. Cue nasty spot … Continue reading
I’ve tried a few different BB creams and this one is definitely my go-to one at the moment. I’d tried Garnier BB cream quite a while back when it first launched and I managed to get some in Singapore. I was … Continue reading
Primers are still a bit of a new concept for me. My skin is very sensitive, with occasional breakouts, and the thought of layering more than 2 products on it still freaks me out a bit. Too many bad experiences with make-up and skincare products during my teens and 20s have left me wary of applying anything more than a basic moisturiser and foundation. Funny thing is, in my 30s I’ve learnt that it was more a case me using the wrong products for my skin and not looking after it properly that resulted in all those unwanted breakouts.
I have oily skin, that is also temperamental at times and can dry and sensitive, and am always on the lookout for products that will leave it with a matt finish. I’m tired of getting to halfway through the day and my eyeshadow has creased, my mascara has left lines on my eyelids and I have a shiny nose. Surely there must be a way that I can get to 4 pm with make-up that still looks freshly applied?
I’ve seen the Revlon Photoready primer on a few beauty blogs. I decided to try it out and chose the perfecting primer in the range – there is also a colour correcting one but I don’t really need that. I applied it for the first time and could immediately feel a soft matt finish. I applied my make-up as usual and went on with my day. Much later that afternoon I took a look in the mirror and to my surprise my make-up still looked great AND freshly applied! A few days later I went to yoga in the evening and was amazed to see that my make-up still looked great when I got home after the class (in general I try not to gym with any make-up on so that my pores can breathe, but on this particular day I hadn’t removed it before yoga). Liquid liner also stays in place all day which is such a relief because I always battle with that.
I have been using this primer for 2 weeks now and am in love with it! Applying more than 2 layers of products no longer freaks me out as much and I haven’t had any breakouts. I am so happy with it I even went out and bought a second one in case it is limited edition and I won’t be able to get more. It sells for between R179 and R199 and I found it at Dischem and Clicks.
Last week Monday I was treated to high tea at the Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa by 27Pinkx for their press launch. I was greeted at the door by the lovely Jen Su and Danielle Franco and handed a welcome glass of orange juice. I helped myself to some of the delicious snacks and found a seat at a table decorated with the prettiest flower arrangements.
Jen Su introduced Khatija and Anjum, sisters who own 27Pinkx, and gave us some background info on them. These ladies are absolutely breathtaking in person and have really come far from growing up in a small town in Limpopo to running their online store that showcases these fabulous luxury products.
27Pinkx was created with one simple mission in mind: to bring a little piece of Hollywood luxury to women throughout South Africa. They produce exceptional and stylish make-up, storage items and tools at affordable prices.
I’ve seen 27Pinkx’s products on their site, but that’s never as exciting as seeing them in person, being able to touch them and do some swatching of the shimmering shades. The eyeshadows are super rich in colour, have a great shimmer to them and each palette contains 10 shades in 1.
Krassi Toma did make-up tutorials on two models, one had sultry lips and the other smoky eyes – two looks I believe every woman should try at least once. When he finished the smoky eyes he blew pigment off a piece of paper across her eyes. It left a faint sparkle over her eyes which caught the light perfectly. A very clever tip! But you would need a friend to help you out with that.
These items are definitely on my wishlist:
Thank you Danielle and 27Pinkx for the invite and lovely tea.
I must admit when I saw that MAC was bringing Heroine back I didn’t really know too much about it. That might be because it isn’t a coral shade… I went to MAC in Rosebank and asked them if they had it so that I could see it firsthand and I was told they only received 3 lipsticks – 1 tester and 2 lipsticks which sold out immediately. My first question is why on earth would they only give the store 2 lipsticks to sell if this is a popular shade they brought back? I know quite a few ladies who are dying to get their hands on one. So I decided to go home and see if I could order it online, knowing full well that it could potentially be sold out online too.
I still, however, had not seen what Heroine would look like on me… One of the many wonderful things about Pinterest is you can do a search for a lipstick and almost always it immediately brings up tons of pictures with swatches of that lipstick as well as pictures of beautiful ladies who are wearing the shade. This is great because even though the purple looks quite dark on the lipstick bullet, I wasn’t too sure what it would look like on me. Well there was one picture on Pinterest of a stunning lady wearing it that had me sold and I knew that I needed this lipstick shade in my life!
I logged on to the MAC online store for South Africa and ordered Heroine immediately. Although the delivery time is quite long (more than 5 days which feels like f-o-r-e-v-e-r) it was worth the wait and I am absolutely in love with this colour! Thank you MAC for brining it back.
These are some of the beautiful ladies I saw on Pinterest wearing Heroine.

2 products I really fell in love with in 2013 (and can’t live without) are the Moroccanoil Treatment and Chanel Le Volume mascara.
The Moroccanoil Treatment has been praised for quite some time now and after I had tried the cheaper versions, which are not bad at all, I still longed to see what all the hype was about. I was lucky enough to receive a sample bottle at an event earlier in the year which I decided to use sparingly. I have wavy hair and have quite a bit of colour in it so my hair needed TLC urgently. The first thing I noticed about the Moroccanoil Treatment was its amazing smell . Not only did I notice it, people who have smelt my hair in passing have also complimented me on it. Secondly I noticed that I really didn’ t need to use much of the oil on my hair, unlike the cheaper versions which I tend to have to use a fair amount more. I either apply the oil to my hair after washing it and leave my hair to dry naturally – the great thing about the oil is it stops my hair from frizzing – or I apply it after I’ve blowdried or straightened it, smoothing all flyaways and adding a bit more shine. The oil is pricey but I treated myself to a large bottle last year for my birthday and I am happy to say it is worth every cent. It also comes in a small bottle which is great for when you travel so I purchased one of those too and have taken it with on a few trips. There are two different oils depending on whether you are blonde or a brunette so be sure to ask the stylist/salesperson which one is right for you. You can find the full Moroccanoil range at most hair salons.
Last year I attended a Chanel pop up shop with friends and we went home with goodie bags filled with products in sample sized treats. One of those treats was a sample of the Le Volume Mascara. I hadn’t tried the mascara immediately but friends of mine who had gone with me had and were raving about it. I have to say after the first time I used it I was completely hooked! The wand and bristles are designed in such a way that it’s super easy to apply the mascara, which really left my long lashes looking even longer! I instantly fell in love with Le Volume so I made sure I got one at duty free when I flew overseas in December. It is also a pricey product but worth it if you want to experience the ultimate lashes it leaves you with.
Nudes are always my go-to colour for my eyes when applying make-up. Occasionally I’ll feel adventurous and choose a gunmetal or cobalt shade for a little drama but most days I find myself either wearing a light nude with a bold lip or an intense brown with light lips.
As soon as I saw this Catrice palette in Dischem the other day I knew I had to have it. It has a great selection of nudes to choose from and they have a lovely shimmery finish. At the end of the day I find this eyeshadow hardly creases in my eyelid and still looks relatively freshly applied which is fantastic!
This palette is on sale at the amazing price of R64.95.
